Itsukushima Shrine’s Chinkasai Festival is held every December 31st from 6pm, providing a show visitors are unlikely to forget. The festival is intended to protect both the Shrine and the town from disastrous fires, a real concern where, traditionally, close-set buildings were constructed largely of wood and paper. The way the festival approaches the problem, however, may seem a bit counterintuitive.

Late in the evening, crowds of young men begin to gather in the area before the Shrine. An huge fire is lit and the men, working in teams, scramble to take hold of enormous torches made of bundled pine wood. With the torches blazing and smoking, the men dash for the Otorii gate and for a time the whole sea between the Shrine and the gate appears to be on fire. Chinkasai is sometimes translated as the “fire-sating” festival, and the idea seems to be that by feeding fire now, the Shrine and town will be spared its hunger later. An interesting idea, and a dramatic and exciting display.

Autumn leaves in Miyajima

Autumn is coming to Hiroshima very soon. It's been chilly these days.　Easy to get sick as seasons change. Please take good care of yourself.

Kikka Festibal will be held in Miyajima in October. This festival is for offering chrysanthemum flowers to Japanese god.
There will be court dance performance.

The court dance and music introduced into Miyajima from Kyoto by Kiyomori Taira is dancing by the gagaku. Around 20 pieces including "Ryo-oh", "Nasori" "Manzai raku" and "Engi raku" are still handed down to Itsukushima Shrine from the latter period in the twelfth century.

Even it does not remain in India where is its birthplace, China, and the Korean Peninsura now. It is conserved in the Imperial Household Agency, Shitenno-ji Temple in Osaka, Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima and other several places in Japan.

August 6th. A significant date in the history of Japan and the world.
It is on, and around, this date that thousands of tourists from overseas, and foreigners living in Japan, head to Hiroshima to visit the museum and attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony.

This year, however, will be a little different.......

On Monday August 8th, there will be a rare chance to meet a survivor of the A-bomb at Tengu Gallery (Hondori).
Keijiro Matsushima was 16 when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
He will give his testimony of what happened on that fateful day in ENGLISH and there will be a Q&A session afterwards.

So to foster understanding, and in the hope that this atrocity is never repeated, why not come along and listen to Matsushima's story?
Matsushima gives a human face to the A-bombing tragedy.

Keijiro Matsushima - Kataribe (Storyteller)

Born in Hiroshima City in 1929 (82 years old).
He was 16-years-old when the atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
At that time, he was inside a school building that was only two kilometers away from the epicenter.
He taught English in junior high school after the World War II.
After his retirement, he has been active as "Kataribe," a storyteller who recounts his personal atomic bomb experiences to younger generations.

2011年の路面電車まつりは、6月5日に開催予定で
毎年、「路面電車の日」である6月10日の前後で行われています。

広電路面電車まつり 2011では、
大正形電車やハノーバー電車といった珍しい車両から、
最新鋭のグリーンムーバーマックス、
カープ電車やサンフレ電車なども展示されたり、

普段、一般の人は入ることのできない広島電鉄の車庫内の施設や

My friend Tasuku Tsuji is showing his debut performance in this film, so I would like to introduce this film "COLD SLEEP". He joined this drama as a drummer and a sub dancer.

It's mixed performance with a violin and ballet showing their love story in the era of post-apocalyptic world.The woman was in the cold sleep. And the tough guy appeared in front of her. She awake from cold sleep and fell in love with him. However strong thunder killed him. She was so depressed and fell sleep into cold sleep again...

My writing skill in English is not good so I cannot explain well, but this drama was cinemized drama which was played on New National Theatre, Tokyo last fall.

The Hadaka Matsuri takes place on the 3rd Saturday of February every year.

The 442 Regiment was a segregated unit consisting of mainly Japanese American soldiers established in 1942. Initially treated with suspicion, as possible enemy sympathizers it went on to become the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in United States military history. It also suffered a huge percentage of casualties.

Told mostly through interviews with some of the surviving members of the regiment, now in their 80s and 90s, Junichi Suzuki's film not only highlights a relatively unknown aspect of World War II history raises questions about war, ideas of nationality, ethnicity, and remembrance.

Tondo Festivals

If you're driving or biking along the rivers that run through town or in the countryside around the middle of January you may well see groups of people gathered around large bonfires, eating and drinking. This is the tondo matsuri, which is held on or around koshogatsu - literally means "small new year", and is celebrated at lunar New Year.

Local communities gather at the site of their bonfire and burn the New Year decorations, roast mochi and warm sake over the flames, and fan the smoke from the burnt decorations for good luck.

The large Gokoku Shrine, located in the city next to the castle will hold its tondo matsuri on Jan 15th from 10am. You can get an idea of the event from the video below.

There is also a tondo on the banks of the river next to Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni on January, 16 from 5pm to 7pm.

Follow the smoke plumes to the festivals at other shrines, schools and parks.

The Chinka-sai, Fire Prevention Festival, takes place

on the last day of the year in front of Itsukushima Shrine.

WHEN: December 31st (Fri.) from 6PM

Local people make both large and small pine torches throughout the month of December.On the evening of the 31st, as twilight falls, families gather at the shore near the Otorii(Grand gate).

A fire torch is carried from the Shrine and all of the individual pine torches are lit. The larger pine torches are carried by 30-40 men on their shoulder's, while children carry smaller ones. As the torches intensely burn the coastline become a combination of fire and water as the people run about chanting "Yoi, Yoi." After the festival, the embers from the torches are offers to family alters as a good luck charm to prevent fire and to welcome the New Year.

Ebisu Shrine's autumn festival marks the arrival of winter in Hiroshima. Known among locals as Ebessan after the god of commerce, surrounding stores hold sales and buy who Komazarae bamboo rakes adorned with gold coins and a treasure ship. A large keg with mouth wide open is placed in front of the shrine to receive offerings.
The festival usually pulls in around 300,000 people.
Usually on one day final day the main Chuo-dori road is closed to traffic for 3 hours between 7pm and 10pm and addition to all the stalls and activity arund Ebisu shrine there are two stages set up, one at the Ebisu-dori intersection and another at the Shintenchi intersection where kagura dance and taiko drum performances are held.

More of an activity:the artist as choreographer examines ways in which movement of the human body becomes essential components of art-works and how artists transform this ephemeral 'material' into forms of art that transcend categorization as performance. The exhibition introduces artistic practices consisting of action and gesture in a sustainable context, looking at how staged or performative elements are transformed into long-term presentations. Assuming a role that might be likened to a choreographer, the participating artists create unconventional forms of visual art that take into account the unique relationship between the artist's practice and the audience or participant at a specific moment or site.

Artists today are shedding light on the performative medium, which arose in opposition to conventional art forms, by generating temporal experiences. These artists continue to interpret and develop this historical achievement as a means of rethinking the conventional museological context for the reception of art as well as daily life. Bruce Nauman, who has long been exploring the performative in art, expresses it as 'more of an activity and less of a product.' * Inspired by these words, this exhibition focuses on post-performance practices as an emerging field of expression.

The performative tendency has been supported in part by new technology. Since the 1960's and 70's, artists have been using new technology experimentally to transform ephemeral phenomena into more lasting and sustainable material. Video has become a medium for comparing and contrasting the various ways to record and retrieve action and gesture. Artists use video not only as a means to represent bodily movement, but also as a provocative tool to edit and frame movement and enlarge choreographic practices.

The artists in this exhibition naturally engage and interact with the public. And through this interaction with their audience and participants, they blur the boundaries between life and art. As the body is one of the most democratic - and primary - instruments for expression, as well as a universal language, this exhibition can explore common practices and interests of contemporary artists from a global perspective.

More of an activity looks at both the aspirations behind artists' use of the human body, as well as the variety of forms this vein of artistic expression takes. As the curtain opens on 'more of a two-month performance,' we hope that for visitors this exhibition will provide a more physical, accessible, direct experience of art.

The Kangensai Festival reproduces a dynastic spectacle of the Monarchial Age on June 17th of the lunar calender, and has become one of the greatest festivals of Itsukushima Shrine.

According the Hiroshima Keizai Shinbum, the Sumiyoshi Shrine Kangensai is, along with the Toukasan in June and Ebessan in November, one of Hiroshima big three festivals.

Boats carrying a mikoshi portable shrine and musicians in Heian costumes playing Heian instruments will make their way up the Honkawa River to Sorasaya Shrine in Honkawa and back.

At Sumiyoshi Shrine visitors will pass through a 3m diameter chi no wa ring to make their offerings to ward of misfortune, dolls will be floated in lanterns in the river in addition to kagura dance, fireworks and over 300 street stalls.

Every year in June, a festival called TOKASAN is held in the heart of the Hiroshima city. This year it was held from June 4th of Friday to June 6th of Sunday. During this festival, many people in Hiroshima wear Yukata and gather the city center to enjoy themselves and to welcome this season. Join the crowd of people and take part in the "walking over fire ceremony" at Daiganiji Temple (Nov 5) and Daishoin Temple (Nov 15)on the island of Miyajima.

Walk across hot coals "to pray for protection from illness and disaster."
You can join the other participants who go through physical pain in hopes of future comfort.

Some claim that if you have
"a pure heart" or good reasons to will yourself across the coals....

Discover the beautiful Hina doll heirlooms, and learn about the significance of the festival for Japanese girls. Private antique dolls are on display at over 30 locations throughout Miyajima.

Get a free event map and directions from English speaking volunteers at Miyajima-guchi ferry terminal during the event. You can orgnize your visit with their help at the Doll Festival Information Center in Omotesando Shopping Arcade.

A ticket is required for the four main exhibition sites. Get a passport ticket at the pier or at the four main sites (Ticket Adult:300yen/Age15-18:170yen/Age6-14:150yen).

With this ticket you can see the dolls at the four main sites:

* Miyajima History and Folklore Museum (English-speaking guides)

This museum is in a 170 year-old merchant house. It contains many interesting folkloric exhibits.

* Daishoin Temple

This is the oldest temple in Miyajima, with lots of attractive Buddhist pavillions and statues. The 14th Dalai Lama visited this temple to celebrate its 1200th year in 2006. Apart from the Hina doll exhibit, the Japanese culture workshop / International Cafe and the spring tea ceremony are also located here.

* Yamanaka House

This historical residence is open to the public for the first time this year during Hina Doll Festival.

* Konishi House

The Konishi family once brewed sacred sake (rice wine), dedicated to the gods of Itsukushima Shrine.

Feb 3 (Wed) Setsubun

February 3rd is Setsubun(節分). Setsubun literally means seasonal division and marks the coming of spring.

On setsubun there is special ritual called Mamemaki, it means bean-throwing, to expel demons and invite fortune. It's performed at houses, temples and shrines all over Japan. People throw roasted soybeans saying "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi! (Get out Ogre! Come in Happiness!)." After mamemaki, people eat the number of beans as to their age. It's believed people won't get sick during the year by doing so.

In Hirhoshima, Daishoin Temple on Miyajima is a popular place to take part in the ritual. The ritual will start from 11:00.

KOTO is a kind of zither. It has been used as one of

the main chamber instruments of Japanese traditional music style.

The length of KOTO is about 180cm. A traditional KOTO has 13 strings,

being arched tautly across 13 movable bridges along the length of the instrument.

Players make base pitches by moving these13 bridges before playing.

It is very interesting to watch!
