Miyajima Ropeway closed between July 4th - July 8th



Miyajima Ropeway is closed between
July 4th-July 8th

due to the maintenance.



Still, many people walk up to the top
of Mt. Misen.


Once you get to the top, you'll forget how
tired you were when you see the beautiful
Inland sea Islands.

It's getting hotter and hotter these days,
but why don't you try?

April 16th-18th Toka Festival in Miyajima Island.


Toka Festival in Miyajima Island @ Itsukushima shrine

April 16th(Sat)- 18th(Mon) 9AM-

Fee: Adimission fee for Itsukushima shrine ¥300 only

It is very interesting to see the Japanese traditional dancing with Gagaku music as well as Noh mask and Kimono.

Make your own Momiji Manju in Miyajima!

You can find many specialties anywhere in Japan.

Momiji Manju is a one of Hiroshima local specialty.
It is a sweet bean paste filled cake. Shaped just like a small maple leaf.
Now you can make your own Momiji Manju in Miyajima Island!


Where: Shishiiwa Ropeway station

Fee:300yen/person (If you are a couple, 500yen/a couple)

When:10:00-12:00 / 13:30-15:30
( It will take 15-20 minutes for the experience.)

*You need to make a booking in advance on the 2nd floor of Shishiiwa station.
*Sign up: 2 or more only

You will also see the nice view from the top of Misen mountain.
It takes only 10 minutes to get to the top from Shishiiwa Ropeway station.

If the weather is very clear, you will be able to see lots of small islands in Seto inland sea.

New year holidays events in Miyajima 2011

There are lots of events in Miyajima Island at Itsukushima shrine right now!!

Jan. 2nd
11:00~ Bugaku performance "Omatsubayashi shinnou"

Jan.3rd
9:00~ Genshisai ceremony

Jan.5th
5:30(AM) Chikyusai ceremony and Bugaku performance
Includes batoh (Sunrise dance)
***Only performed once on the 5th of Jan.

Admission fee (Itsukushima shrine) : 300yen

The first ferry to get to Miyajima Island leaves at 6:25 from Miyajimaguchi port.

Dec.31st(Fri.) Miyajima Chinka-sai

The Chinka-sai, Fire Prevention Festival, takes place
on the last day of the year in front of Itsukushima Shrine.




WHEN: December 31st (Fri.) from 6PM
WHERE: Miyajima Island

Local people make both large and small pine torches throughout the month of December.On the evening of the 31st, as twilight falls, families gather at the shore near the Otorii(Grand gate).

A fire torch is carried from the Shrine and all of the individual pine torches are lit. The larger pine torches are carried by 30-40 men on their shoulder's, while children carry smaller ones. As the torches intensely burn the coastline become a combination of fire and water as the people run about chanting "Yoi, Yoi." After the festival, the embers from the torches are offers to family alters as a good luck charm to prevent fire and to welcome the New Year.

Hiwatari shiki is a "Fire walking ceremony".
This ceremony is held semiyearly in April and November.
You make a wish as you walk on the fire place as pictured above.
If you would like to participate a fire walking, be ready to be bear foot on the spot!

Sep. 18th to 20th. Experience Japanese cultural Activities!

Are you interested in Japanese cultural Activities?

Three activities will be held in Hiramatsu chaya on Miyajima Island.

1. Tea ceremony (1000yen) 1 hour (It starts every hour from 9am - 5pm)
You will learn Japanese traditional tea ceremony and then you will participate in one. Tea
and Japanese sweets are served during the ceremony.

2.Calligraphy class (1300yen) 1 hour (It starts from 9am, 11am, 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm)
  You do not need to bring anything and the art that you make in the class is yours to keep!

3.Cooking class (1500yen for lunch/ 2500yen for dinner class)**Reservation's required**
Enjoy cooking Japanese food and eating them :)
Lunch class starts from 10am (About 1hour and 30minutes)
Menu: 18th and 20th Tempra Udon(Wheat noodle in soup with Tempra) ,Rice ball, Dessert
19th Spicy Yaki Udon(Spicy fried Okonomiyaki taste wheat noodle) , Rice ball, Dessert

Dinner class starts from 3pm (About 3 hours)
Menu: 18th to 20th
Teriyaki Chicken, Grilled fish, Dashimaki Tamago (Rolled egg), Chawanmushi with Japanese clams(steamed egg hotpot)

Come to Hiramatsu chaya 10 minutes before the classes.

From Hiroshima Hana Hostel: It takes about 40 minutes to get Miyajima Island.

August 14th(SAT) Miyajima Fireworks Festival

WHEN: August 14th(SAT) 19:50 - 20:50

WHERE:  
In front of Itsukushima Shrine

          ACCESS: From Hiroshima station, take the SANYO line to
JR Miyajima guchi station(25 min.),
and take the
ferry from the port.(10 min.)
OR
Take the tram #2 from Hiroshima station to
Hiroden Miyajima guchi(1.5 hrs.)


5,328 fireworks!!

You can see the fireworks from both sides, instead of
going to the island.
