August 6th. A significant date in the history of Japan and the world.
It is on, and around, this date that thousands of tourists from overseas, and foreigners living in Japan, head to Hiroshima to visit the museum and attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony.

This year, however, will be a little different.......

On Monday August 8th, there will be a rare chance to meet a survivor of the A-bomb at Tengu Gallery (Hondori).
Keijiro Matsushima was 16 when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
He will give his testimony of what happened on that fateful day in ENGLISH and there will be a Q&A session afterwards.

So to foster understanding, and in the hope that this atrocity is never repeated, why not come along and listen to Matsushima's story?
Matsushima gives a human face to the A-bombing tragedy.

Keijiro Matsushima - Kataribe (Storyteller)

Born in Hiroshima City in 1929 (82 years old).
He was 16-years-old when the atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
At that time, he was inside a school building that was only two kilometers away from the epicenter.
He taught English in junior high school after the World War II.
After his retirement, he has been active as "Kataribe," a storyteller who recounts his personal atomic bomb experiences to younger generations.

Every February, on one of the coldest nights of the year, thousands of men parade around Saidaiji in Okayama Prefecture wearing nothing but fundoshi, getting geed up for a midnight battle for some lucky sticks in the main hall of Saidaiji Temple.

The Hadaka Matsuri takes place on the 3rd Saturday of February every year.

You can pick up a fundoshi for about ¥1000 and join in the "fun" or just go along and watch. The shingi sticks are released at midnight, but there are other events held at the temple from 6pm.

Setsubun marks the end of the lunar year and the coming of spring. It is marked by a cleansing ritual of oni harai that's performed in houses and elementary schools all over Japan.

Tondo Festivals

If you're driving or biking along the rivers that run through town or in the countryside around the middle of January you may well see groups of people gathered around large bonfires, eating and drinking. This is the tondo matsuri, which is held on or around koshogatsu - literally means "small new year", and is celebrated at lunar New Year.

Local communities gather at the site of their bonfire and burn the New Year decorations, roast mochi and warm sake over the flames, and fan the smoke from the burnt decorations for good luck.


The large Gokoku Shrine, located in the city next to the castle will hold its tondo matsuri on Jan 15th from 10am. You can get an idea of the event from the video below.


There is also a tondo on the banks of the river next to Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni on January, 16 from 5pm to 7pm.

Follow the smoke plumes to the festivals at other shrines, schools and parks.

Ebisu Shrine's autumn festival marks the arrival of winter in Hiroshima. Known among locals as Ebessan after the god of commerce, surrounding stores hold sales and buy who Komazarae bamboo rakes adorned with gold coins and a treasure ship. A large keg with mouth wide open is placed in front of the shrine to receive offerings.
The festival usually pulls in around 300,000 people.
Usually on one day final day the main Chuo-dori road is closed to traffic for 3 hours between 7pm and 10pm and addition to all the stalls and activity arund Ebisu shrine there are two stages set up, one at the Ebisu-dori intersection and another at the Shintenchi intersection where kagura dance and taiko drum performances are held.

More of an activity:the artist as choreographer

More of an activity:the artist as choreographer examines ways in which movement of the human body becomes essential components of art-works and how artists transform this ephemeral 'material' into forms of art that transcend categorization as performance. The exhibition introduces artistic practices consisting of action and gesture in a sustainable context, looking at how staged or performative elements are transformed into long-term presentations. Assuming a role that might be likened to a choreographer, the participating artists create unconventional forms of visual art that take into account the unique relationship between the artist's practice and the audience or participant at a specific moment or site.

Artists today are shedding light on the performative medium, which arose in opposition to conventional art forms, by generating temporal experiences. These artists continue to interpret and develop this historical achievement as a means of rethinking the conventional museological context for the reception of art as well as daily life. Bruce Nauman, who has long been exploring the performative in art, expresses it as 'more of an activity and less of a product.' * Inspired by these words, this exhibition focuses on post-performance practices as an emerging field of expression.

The performative tendency has been supported in part by new technology. Since the 1960's and 70's, artists have been using new technology experimentally to transform ephemeral phenomena into more lasting and sustainable material. Video has become a medium for comparing and contrasting the various ways to record and retrieve action and gesture. Artists use video not only as a means to represent bodily movement, but also as a provocative tool to edit and frame movement and enlarge choreographic practices.

The artists in this exhibition naturally engage and interact with the public. And through this interaction with their audience and participants, they blur the boundaries between life and art. As the body is one of the most democratic - and primary - instruments for expression, as well as a universal language, this exhibition can explore common practices and interests of contemporary artists from a global perspective.

More of an activity looks at both the aspirations behind artists' use of the human body, as well as the variety of forms this vein of artistic expression takes. As the curtain opens on 'more of a two-month performance,' we hope that for visitors this exhibition will provide a more physical, accessible, direct experience of art.
